Nana
I waited 22 years to have real Grandparents. I enjoyed you only for a year.
But there are so many memories...
The shower, my shower - you pinned the flowers on me - it was your birthday and you got so exited about my little present. You used to embroider too - so you knew all the "secrets" and the enjoyment of it...
The Seders. Both of them - but especially the last one. I paid attention to a line saying - "The mother of the sons is happy", and wanted to show it to you but the men went on with the service and I thought to myself - next year... and there is no next year...
One of the most precious memories for me - the dinner that we brought to you because you couldn't come to us and I wanted you to see that we really can cook... You said it was the first dinner your grandchildren did for you - and were so happy that there was no sugar in the cucumber salad...
Little and big memories make you whole in my mind. When I get to be a grandmother - you will be my example.
Thank you,
Genia

letter to Gam & Zayde - Oct. 26 1977
Dear Mom & Dad,
We just ran out of tape, so i continue in a letter. We told you the trip itinerary the way we see it, & we would like to hear what do you think about it as soon as possible. you also asked for a list of clothing so here it is: Women: 1) Hat 2) scarf (they don't give you doylies here at synagogue) 3)Bathing suits (even if it seems cold, Ein-gedi, the dead sea & the Kineret are "swimable" in May). 4) Good walking shoes, please try them before you come, for a nice long walk, we don't want any sore feet around here. 5) Good sunglasses. 6) One long sleeve - covering knees dress, or a skirt & blouse, to walk in when we go to the religious parts or to a synagogue. please, not too fancy, it should look modest. 7) One nice dress or pant-suit or something to wear when & if we or you all eat in a fancier restaurant. 8) Sweater & windbreaker, it gets quite chilly here at nights!! but don't bring a winter coat, it is not that chilly. 9)Moisturiser & chopstick, don't forget the weather is quite dry here. I have both of the above, but not every skin takes the same kind & besides, if you go traveling south for three days, you'll probably need a bottle each. 10) If you go traveling south, take sun-tan lotion, you can get quite a burn otherwise. 11)last but not least: a pair of comfortable sandals, because, a. shoes might be too hot, b. they can brake &/or get wet &/or get lost &/or prove uncomfortable after all, so you should have something to switch into. the careful ones should bring snickers too 12)comfy light slacks to walk in. Do no bring 1)towels, the hotels give them for the time you stay there, & if there is a need for more, we really have enough, if you don't believe us, ask aunt Anita & Uncle Fred & Aunt Lea & Uncle Herb who sure made sure of that. 2)Much jewlery I'm sure you'd like to buy some here, & the best way of avoiding taxing on it on our way back is to wear as much as you can, well if you wear a lot on your way in you'll look like a goish hanukka-bush on your way out! 3)raincoat, umbrella, boots: it doesn't rain here in May!! & even if the weather will decide to trick us, the way it did when Edi was here, so ask him, it pores for 20 mints, or so during which we can hide somewhere, & then the sun shines again, as if it never happened. 4)electric hair dryer, tooth brush or anything else of the sort. don't forget that the current here is different & it really isn't worth a transformer, we have, a hair drier, a wshing machine & an iron, & everybody is welcome to them.
Now Men: Bring: 1)Bathing suit 2)Good walking shoes 3) Good sandals 4) Sweater 5) Wind breaker 6)a couple pairs of light & comfi slacks & one warm, 7) Good sunglasses 8) a yarmalka 9)a hat 10) I you intend to join Popop & Jay to synagogue on Shabbat - a tallis. 11) something nice to wear to a restaurant, no more than a sport jacket & no more than one!! (do not bring a jacket & tie to go to synagogue in!! it's Israel)
Do not bring: 1) everything that i wrote for women not to bring, for the same reasons. 2) an electric shaver, & if you do, make sure, with a transformer (we have one, but it is not enough for all of you unless you shave in shifts...).
This is just about it, Try not to overload. slippers might be a good idea too, thinking about it.
Mom, I have slippers & a roab & stuff like that to give you, also t-shirts, the same about Ellis, so don't stuff those things into your suitcases, it insn't worth the trouble to carry it. Dad is a bit big, unless he looses a lot of weight, to get into anything of Jay's but he should know that if there is an emergancy (suitcase didn't come or forgot something, or anything of the sort) Kuba's stuff will fit him just fine. Also in case of emergency anything can be bought here.
Can't wait to see you!!
Love Genia & Jay

letter to Gam & Zayde - April 22nd, 1987
Dear Mom and Dad,
We've been pushing this letter off too long, so i decided to put it on my list of work on the computer together with my files for my different classes. I hope you don't mind being computerized too often. woops, I even have it justified, well i can take that off, so there, no more justification.
It was wonderful talking to you on the phone, and I am sorry I got a bit carried away talking about my father. I do worry about him. we are going over to him for shabbat and i already convinced him that if he feels well he should come with us home, since he wants us to take a cab all the way anyway, and stay here as long as he feels up to it. The reason I managed to convince him of that is that we are finally having our bathrooms done and I asked him to come and take charge of some of the things, see to whatever etc. Of course there is nothing substantial to be done but i guess i managed to convince him that he is needed, otherwise he wouldn't think of coming. The house is a big mess, but the guy in charge promised it will be finished and completed and cleaned before you come. Most of the big mess should be over by tomorrow anyway, because they are almost finished banging, and it will be time to put things in.
The girls wrote their own wish lists in English, and I hope you can understand whatever is there. Jay told you about the camera my father asked for. He would like to pay for it and you should only know that a comparable one costs here around $500! so if you can get one for half the price - he will gain much. Nikon AF is the name of ours, but anything else that is of the same or better level of taking pictures, and has a timing device is going to be just as good. I'm also sending a picture I found in a "Mothercare" magazine of a hamper I would like to have. I think I saw in the US also one that is of the same idea, but he bags are disposable, and you are supposed to use regular huge garbage bags with it. If you can bring us that kind, please also bring a couple of bags, because I am not sure where to get them here, although I am sure I will find a good source in time. The other out of the ordinary thing I have is a request from a colleague of mine. perhaps Ron could get it, and if you can't bring it I think it could be sent under "bookrate": a record Verve Ella Fitzgerald sings Duke Ellington Vol. 2. he has Vol. 1 so please only that if it can be found. I'm passing the keyboard over to my dearly beloved, so bye, and see you soon, and I miss you and so on.
